Background

Background

The challenge sponsor, ASFiNAG, the Austrian highway operator, is transitioning into a sustainable mobility partner, focusing on smart traffic management, aligning with the Mobility Master Plan 2030. This involves prioritizing public transport, increasing vehicle occupancy, and optimizing existing infrastructure. ASFiNAG aims to promote greener mobility while also integrating cycling paths into their ideal motorway cross-section through innovative solutions, ensuring compatibility between high-ranking roads and cycle paths. In summary, ASFiNAG plans to expand cycle path infrastructure where feasible and safe, while enhancing overall mobility.

Challenge

Which technical-organisational measures enable a resource-saving and safe routing of cycle paths on, next to, under or over highways and motorways?

Expected outcome

The objective is two-fold: integrating cycling routes into ASFiNAG's motorway system and catering to cyclists' needs, including green, accessible commuter paths and bypassing traffic in urban areas. Various solutions are considered, such as parallel cycle paths behind noise barriers or on the motorway itself, using modular components for cost-efficiency and scalability. To optimise existing infrastructure, motorway sections may temporarily become cycling routes during low traffic or peak hours, with adaptable features like opening hard shoulders. Additionally, cycle highways may incorporate roofs, photovoltaic elements for e-bike charging, multiple lanes, and noise/emissions mitigation measures. Sustainability in construction materials is also emphasised.
