Background

The City of Duisburg's Smart City Initiative is under the guidance of the Digitalisation Unit, an entity within the City of Duisburg. The Digitalisation Unit plays a pivotal role in connecting various stakeholders, including the administration, businesses, residents, and other sectors of society, concerning the Smart City Duisburg initiative.

Operating within this framework, the Digitalisation Unit is entrusted with overseeing projects in several key domains: economy, infrastructure, mobility, education, housing, as well as broadband and 5G. These specific areas were established in the Digital Duisburg Master Plan. The department fosters novel project concepts through collaborations with various City of Duisburg departments, corporate partners, neighboring municipalities, and the local citizenry. It also takes on the crucial tasks of coordinating Smart City partner activities, managing digitalization projects, and maintaining transparency in the development process for employees, residents, and political leaders.

In our quest to tackle issues related to heat management, heavy rainfall protection, smart mobility, and the development of intelligent neighborhoods, we are focused on addressing these multifaceted challenges at the neighborhood level. Our aim is to cultivate innovative solutions that create safer and more enjoyable urban environments. We are actively seeking solutions and exemplary practices that encompass heat mitigation, heavy rainfall resilience, smart mobility, and intelligent neighborhood development. This includes the critical aspects of energy and heat transition, which we are already deeply engaged with in our extensive building projects. Additionally, we are exploring strategies to digitalize our administrative processes, especially in light of the skilled labor shortage within these domains.
