Accessibility & Inclusivity

A safe infrastructure is fundamental to achieving Vision Zero goals: no fatalities by 2050 and a 50% reduction by 2030. Making informed, data-driven, qualitative decisions is imperative.

Where current tools are based on crash data and video-analytics of near-misses, the ROADSCOR (Road Optimisation Analysis for Design Safety by Conflict Review) methodology enhances safety by being able to look forward and identify critical scenarios according to ISO21448.

The methodology complements existing tooling by providing insights into high-risk traffic conflicts in a structured and reproducible manner, quantifying safety and allowing evaluation of measures and modifications before implementation. An initial assessment demonstrated socio-economic cost savings up to $10 million, including $600,000 direct cost to road authorities, for a single intersection.

Intersection with potential conflicts

The possible conflicts and their severity depend on the intersection design, the type of road users, traffic rules and behavior.

Roads dominated by motorized traffic

In many cities nowadays, especially outside Europe, roads are designed for motorized traffic instead of active mobility.

Pedestrians on a cross walk

Pedestrians and cyclists face the highest risk of serious injuries or casualties in a road crash.

Crash with a Vulnerable Road User

Where the goal is to reduce the number of road crashes, the number of conflicts with Vulnerable Road Users has been increasing in most European countries over the last years.
