Background

The ever-increasing demands of the citizen in the matter of parking require more and more actions from the Municipal authority. The search for a free parking space, as well as the search for a way to pay for it, forces drivers - citizens, but also visitors to waste a lot of time, in order to manage to leave their car, often at a great distance from the place where they work, live or visit The total demand requirement for parking of drivers - users, creates several times extensive conditions of illegal parking in all road sections of the center during peak periods. Illegal parking occurs as a consequence of insufficient free on-street parking, a lack of acceptable alternative parking and insufficient policing.

In the Municipality of Xanthi, the current situation regarding the control of violations related to controlled parking and in cases of illegal parking in disabled spaces, on sidewalk ramps and at pedestrian entrances is done without the support of any automated electronic system. The employees who are in charge of controlling illegal parking patrol the streets within the boundaries of the Municipality and when they find a violation, they confirm it by issuing a summons. This way of checking and verifying violations is not efficient and costs a lot of time and money for the municipality, since the responsible employees have to patrol constantly in order to detect the violators. Due to the limited staffing of the Municipality, it is not possible to verify all violations in time. This results in:

  • the suffering of citizens
  • the loss of significant revenue for the municipality of Xanthi

This project concerns the creation of an integrated system with the aim of decongesting the city, upgrading and serving drivers.
