Background

In transport planning in particular, the concerns of pedestrian traffic have not been the focus of attention in recent decades. This has changed significantly recently: many municipalities now recognize the importance of walking for active mobility in urban areas and want to promote this form of transport more systematically.

More and more municipalities are developing district-specific local mobility concepts, city-wide pedestrian traffic strategies, pedestrian traffic concepts or are integrating the task as sub-concepts into strategic city-wide mobility plans or are currently planning such concepts.

The aim of the research project is to compile and systematise the existing strategic approaches to municipal pedestrian traffic planning. Successful approaches to promoting pedestrian traffic must be identified with the aim of communicating these strategies to municipalities and thus increasing the speed of implementation in the municipalities. Content-related topics, concrete measures and instruments as well as process-oriented aspects, such as administrative procedures and the participation of various stakeholders (responsibilities, human resources, cooperation between various specialist offices, etc.) should be taken into account. Furthermore, obstacles to the implementation of the plans should be identified and systematised. To this end, the problems that currently exist in promoting pedestrian traffic should be described.

As a result, the project will provide transferable good examples of pedestrian traffic concepts (best practice) - differentiated according to different types of municipalities, but also indications of individual successful solutions to promote pedestrian traffic.
